In this course, you will learn to effectively educate and communicate with patients and families in a way that empowers them to leverage available resources and become resilient through self-motivated behavior change. The course has the following learning objectives:

  • Describe Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory to help identify patient priorities in the face of adversity.
  • Apply readiness-to-change theory to assess the patient/family’s willingness to participate in the recommended intervention.
  • Implement motivational interviewing techniques and OARS framework to discuss key concepts around ACEs and toxic stress with patients and families.
  • Employ relevant patient education tools related to ACEs and toxic stress.
  • Use a strengths-based, patient-centered approach to facilitate effective “participatory” guidance and promote family resilience and protective factors.
